Do you remember Dolph Carty?. Better late than never!. Discernment in Hard Times

Anglican Diocese of Fredericton
eNews for January 6, 2021
Do you remember Dolph Carty?

Do you remember Dolph Carty?

The Rev. Adolphus Carty grew up in a large, happy family in Saint John, singing in the choir in the Parish of St. Mary’s on Waterloo Street.

He felt called to the ministry, and in the late 1940s, he graduated from Wycliffe College in Toronto.
He returned to his home diocese to seek his first pastoral posting, but he was never successful in that endeavour.

By every account, he was well-liked, a Second World War veteran, musical and talented. Despite the fact that the Carty family was held in very high regard at St. Mary's, he was unable to find a parish in New Brunswick willing to take a Black priest. It’s difficult not to blame racism, says Peter Little.

Check to see if church is on!

With New Brunswick having returned to Orange status, some parishes will not conduct worship in person. Please check with your parish to see whether there are in-person meetings during this time.

A note from David Goss

Looking for Advent & Christmas programing?

For over 50 years, I have been offering church and community-based program focused on Advent and Christmas. I currently have five envelope boxes of material I’d like to see get into someone’s hands that will be able to make use of the material in the Advent/Christmas seasons that will be celebrated long after I am gone.

The boxes contain not only projects that can be done, but inspirational and spiritual reading matter. In addition, there are two boxes of general crafting ideas.

If interested, contact me at gosswalk@nbnet.nb.ca, or by telephone at (506) 672- 8601, so arrangements can be made for shipment, or for delivery if that is possible on one my forays about the province collecting stories or offering programming.

Lenten study book

Lenten study book

With Abp. David's concurrence, the Council Spiritual Development Team is recommending the book Hide This In Your Heart (Memorizing Scripture for Kingdom Impact) as our diocesan Lenten study book for 2021.

The book, by Michael Frost and Graham Joseph Hill, includes five chapters which present a rationale for how memorizing key Scripture verses empowers discipleship and mission, and presents a system for memorizing 40 kingdom theme verses over a 20-week period. The book is a good follow-up to Michael Frost's Surprise the World.

We are able to purchase this book in bulk for $12 (including tax). If you are interested in using this for Lent, please call Cheryl Jacobs (506-459-1801, ext 1001) with an approximate number of books you'll need. Please order by early January to enable distribution in time for Lent.
