Anglican cemeteries need some standardization: chancellor

Anglican cemeteries need some standardization: chancellor

Since becoming diocesan chancellor in 2014, David Bell has heard of many issues with Anglican cemeteries. Various questions have arisen:

• Can only Anglicans be buried in an Anglican cemetery? Only Christians? What about pets?
• Can the parish insist that an Anglican conduct burials?
• Can we prevent people from decorating graves or monuments with lights, sounds, photos, real flowers?
• If members of a family bought a plot decades ago, which ones are entitled to burial now?
• What happens when someone gets buried in the wrong lot?

As such questions came to him, he realized there was little information, no list of cemeteries, and no Synod and little government policy on cemetery management.

A thank you from St. Saviour's Anglican Church in Riga, Latvia

Several parishes in our diocese responded to the request

Dear friends around the world,

From the bottom of our hearts, we cannot thank you enough for supporting our "Baznīcu nakts" (Night of Churches) event by sending us cards for our special display. In all, we were blessed to receive cards from more than 250 churches in 36 countries throughout the world!

Throughout Saturday evening, more than 500 people visited the church and were able to enjoy your cards and learn about your special churches. You can see all of them on a map I have created here.

I have attached a few pictures from the event so you can see how the cards were displayed. We attached them hanging on strings so that our visitors could read your lovely messages as well.

We have decided that even after the event is over, we will continue displaying the cards as a permanent exhibition in the back of the church, and we will continue adding to it over time if anyone else continues to send us postcards. If you are ever able to make it out to Rīga one day, then perhaps you can find your card on our wall!

Thanks again for your friendship and cooperation in making this idea a reality!

Yours in Christ, Joseph Horgan

Comic Relief!

A family was sitting in church while the minister delivered a sermon based on the timeless story of the prodigal son.

When he got to the point where the father sees his son returning and races out to meet him, the minister said, "Throwing wide his arms, the father said..."

At which point a little boy leaned over to his mother and whispered, "YOU'RE GROUNDED!"
