The Bishop of Fredericton seeks to appoint a priest incumbent to the Anglican Parish of Portland in the Diocese of Fredericton.

This single-point parish is located in the north end of the City of Saint John. The church building, St. Luke’s, is a prominent landmark in the Old North End and includes a large hall, industrial kitchen, offices, formation rooms, nursery, washrooms and an elevator.

There is currently one weekly Eucharist on Sundays, alternating BAS and BCP, with a Morning Prayer on a fifth Sunday of the month, with an average attendance of 75. Worship is followed by a fellowship time, including lunch once a month. There are three active layreaders, a gifted organist, youth involvement in the worship and a growing Sunday School.

The parish’s vision focuses on three main areas: outreach, building church family, and youth engagement. Guided by the mission statement "Love of God in Action," the parish congregation is committed to serving both within the church and in the broader community, supporting community outreach efforts and international mission partners.

Expressions of interest will be considered as they arrive.  Please include:

  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A written statement of about 500 words outlining why you are being called to explore this opportunity.
  • The names and contact information for three referees prepared to provide information on the cleric’s pastoral skills, his or her interpersonal and communication skills, ability to build community, ministry experience and sensitivity. If you are an Assistant Curate or graduating postulant for ordination, you should give your Rector, supervising priest or mentor as a reference.

Clergy from outside the diocese should confirm that they have their bishop’s permission to explore a possible appointment outside of their own diocese. A confidential reference may also be requested from your diocesan bishop and in addition to other references.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a valid criminal record and vulnerable sector check and may be required to authorize a credit check.
