Camp Medley open house a hit with new visitors, returning campers

The water was too choppy for kayaking, and rain kept a few people indoors, but not much could dampen the mood of those who showed up for Camp Medley’s open house held June 20.

The day-long event was similar to last year’s 80th anniversary celebration, with the old dining hall filled with photos and memorabilia; games for the kids; videos of past years playing; the open tuck shop; a barbecue lunch and just a few speeches.

Kings Landing summer services

Kings Landing summer services

Services at Kings Landing Historical Settlement take place at the Superior School near the main entrance this summer.

Evening Prayer services will be held there each Sunday at 2 p.m. because of infrastructure upgrades that have closed the other side of the village, including St. Mark’s Chapel of Ease. Construction is supposed to be complete by September, so services will return to St. Mark's.

Visitors and officiating clergy should come in the main entrance. As always, there is no admission fee to attend the service. Any questions should be sent to Canon Walter Williams at goodolpadre@hotmail.ca.

For those wanting to lead a service, consult the sign-up sheet here.

There are still openings for August and September.

Directions: take Route 2 (Trans-Canada Highway) to exit 253 and follow the signs. Or for a scenic drive, take Route 102 along the beautiful St. John River and follow the signs. Kings Landing is about 20 minutes up river from Fredericton.

Historic military flags sought

A message from the Rev. Steven Scribner, Trinity Church, Saint John:

At Trinity, as part of our east window, east wall and sanctuary restoration, we had to take down the eight historic military flags that were in the sanctuary.

We knew they were extremely fragile and for the most part would not endure the construction if left up. They were in the way of scaffolding and folks moving around them, so we took them down. In the process of this, most of them disintegrated in front of us — in tatters.

We are seeking replacements of a sort. Do you or does your parish have historic military flags that need a new home? Would you be willing to allow Trinity to review them and see if they would be suitable for display?

The dimension of our flags are approximately 3'-8" x 3'.

We would like to have flags in place by late August before the scaffolding comes down.

Emancipation Sunday

Emancipation Sunday

Emancipation Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday in July in the Anglican Church of Canada (July 26 in 2026), as formally designated by the General Synod in June 2025. Emancipation Sunday commemorates the coming into effect of the Slavery Abolition Act on August 1, 1834—Emancipation Day—freeing approximately 800,000 enslaved people in British colonies, including Canada.

For more than 180 years, Black communities across Canada have celebrated Emancipation Day with church services, parades, outdoor festivities, protests, speeches, entertainment and more, taking the opportunity for reflection on the struggle for freedom and justice, past and present. By designating an Emancipation Sunday, the General Synod invites Anglicans in Canada to join in that celebration and to support initiatives that address anti-Black racism within our ecclesial structures and in society at large.

More information and liturgical resources are available from the Anglican Church of Canada site.

St. Michael's Youth Conference - Maritimes

St. Michael's Youth Conference - Maritimes

St. Michael’s is an annual conference in the Anglican tradition for youth aged 13–19. Together we pray, study, and play. Since 1987, St Michael’s has formed a vibrant community within the Anglican Church in the Maritimes. Our conference participants—or Michaelites!—don’t do things by half measures. When we worship, we worship God reverently in spirit and truth. When we study, we challenge ourselves to learn deeply. When we kick back for games and activities, we make sure that we have a blast.
